Venture Funds

OUR PROCESS:

GreyMatter Health Ventures is putting venture back into venture capital. We work with universities, hospitals, scientists, and clinicians in the development of ideas into world class commercial medical products. We provide the resources to academic and health care institutions to be able to reap the potential rewards associated with great ideas by bringing together human, financial, and intellectual capital in an environment that is supportive of our institutional partners interests and the interests of developing scientists and physicians.

Unlike many of today’s venture funds that are focused on later stage investments, we are focused on pre-seed stage ideas that have the skeleton of a promising medical device, implant, or therapy. Often intellectual property, and an exceptional prototype are sufficient to spark our interest in the next big thing.

1. First, we define the market opportunity and the size of the potential market for an idea. With thousands of pages of data and endless hours invested in developing research on global healthcare markets, we are frequently able to assess unmet clinical needs quickly. During this part of the process, we determine if a concept is a “product” or a “company.” Some concepts are best developed for commercialization by a major strategic partner, others require the complete infrastructure necessary for a growing company. Identifying the best strategy early helps to define the strategy and tactics for building an attractive exit.

2. In the next stage we evaluate the value drivers of an opportunity. First we examine the intellectual property portfolio, enhancing the strategy if necessary. We then evaluate clinical data, the regulatory process, and reimbursement. The combination of these factors creates a clear picture of an opportunity, that if attractive, we dedicate, time, capital, human resources to bringing to reality.

3. It is at this point that we will provide seed stage funding, and begin the start-up phase where the team, advisory boards, engineers, scientists, and business leaders are brought together to begin to develop and execute on the business plan.
